Chanted Prayers

Chanted prayers (pujas) are a form of meditation, where we connect with and make requests to enlightened beings.  They are a method to focus the mind, receive blessings, accumulate merit and purify negativities.  They are also a special way to benefit and help others.  The pujas at Dorjechang Buddhist Centre are very beautiful prayers sung in English with great meaning and dedicated for the welfare of all living beings.  They help us to develop a positive mind and are the perfect preparation for meditation. There are different types of puja - regular pujas and special tsog offering pujas.  Please see below for more information.

Foundation Programme

About Foundation Programme (FP)

FP provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddhism through a systematic study of six texts:

Classes take place on Sundays 1.30pm - 7.00pm and are led by Gen Kelsang Sangye, Resident Teacher at Dorjechang Centre.

Additional New FP Class

Starting in April, there will be a new Foundation Programme on Wednesday nights at Dorjechang Centre. Studying Universal Compassion with Annabel de Aragues, this is an exceptional opportunity to study in depth and gain deeper familiarity with Buddha’s teachings on developing compassion for all living beings, on a one-night a week study programme.

Universal Compassion gives a practical and uplifting explanation of how we can transform our day-to-day living, including even the most demanding and difficult conditions, into opportunities for personal and spiritual development.  By studying on Foundation Programme we gain a special understanding of the book which means we can take the teachings to heart and apply them in our daily lives.

The classes are held every Wednesday in term time from 7.30pm-9.30pm.

Wednesday FP class fees are £25 per month. If you are interested in joining please contact the EPC at Dorjechang Centre.

The Benefits of Studying and Practising these Texts

Joyful Path of Good Fortune - we gain the ability to put all Buddha’s teachings of both Sutra and Tantra into practice. We can easily make progress on and complete the stages of the path to the supreme happiness of enlightenment. From a practical point of view, Lamrim is the main body of Buddha’s teachings, and the other teachings are like its limbs.

Universal Compassion - we gain the ability to integrate Buddha’s teachings into our daily lives and solve all our human problems.

Heart of Wisdom - we gain a realization of the ultimate nature of reality. By gaining this realization we can eliminate the ignorance of self-grasping, which is the root of all our suffering.

Meaningful to Behold - we transform our daily activities into the Bodhisattva’s way of life, thereby making every moment of our human life meaningful.

Understanding the Mind - we understand the relationship between our mind and its external objects. If we understand that objects depend upon the subjective mind, we can change the way objects appear to us by changing our own mind. Gradually we shall gain the ability to control our mind and in this way solve all our problems.

Eight Steps to Happiness - we can learn how to develop love based on genuine cherishing of others; how to gain practical instructions on transforming life’s difficulties; and we receive essential advice for developing compassion and wisdom

Teacher Training Programme

TTP is designed for people who wish to train as authentic Dharma Teachers. In addition to completing the study of twelve texts of Sutra and Tantra, which include the five texts mentioned above, the student is required to observe certain commitments with regard to behaviour and way of life, and to complete a number of meditation retreats. At present we are studying Meaningful to Behold - the highly acclaimed commentary to Shantideva’s verse masterpiece Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. Classes take place on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings and are lead by Gen Kelsang Sangye, Resident Teacher at Dorjechang Centre.

We recommend a gradual progression from General Programme classes and some study on the Foundation Programme before engaging in the Teacher Training Programme.  Please contact the Centre for more information.

Daily Prayers

med11

Everyday, Kadampa Buddhist Centres around the world engage in Heart Jewel or Wishfulfilling Jewel prayers, which are special Guru Yoga practices of the wisdom Buddhas Je Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugdan.  By relying on Je Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugdan, our compassion, wisdom and spiritual power will naturally increase, and all our experiences of meditation and Dharma will be protected.

At Dorjechang Centre, there is a daily Wishfulfilling Jewel practice from Monday - Thursday at 4.00pm.  Wishfulfilling Jewel with tsog (offering ceremony) is held weekly, usually on Fridays or Saturdays.  Please contact the Centre for times.  On Sundays there is a Heart Jewel practice at 3.30pm.

Tsog pujas

TSOG offering pujas are ceremonies that involve making special offerings to the holy beings and requesting blessings. They are an excellent method for accumulating merit.

It is customary to bring a small offering of food to lay before the shrine before the puja starts.

Offering to the Spiritual Guide: This is the main tsog offering puja held at Dorjechang Centre. It is a ceremony to celebrate the kindness of the spiritual teacher.

Melodious Drum - Long Protector Puja: A ceremony for fulfilling and restoring the commitments of the Dharma Protector.

Please contact the Centre if you are interested in attending these.
